Enrichment during crate rest and recovery

Few things are harder than an energetic dog on strict rest. Mental work is usually allowed when physical work isn't — and it's the difference between a calm recovery and a fortnight of frustration.

Always clear any new activity with the vet managing your dog's recovery first.

Lying-down enrichment

A frozen lick mat inside the crate. A flat snuffle mat placed so your dog can work at it lying down. Kibble scattered on a towel within reach. Sliding-lid puzzles worked with the nose rather than the paws.

Keep excitement low

Avoid anything that causes jumping, spinning or lunging — no rolling treat balls, no throwing food. Calm, slow, repetitive tasks are the goal.

Structure the day

Three or four short sessions beat one long one. Predictable timing settles a restless dog more than variety does.

Watch the wound and the weight

Check surgical sites after each session, and cut the daily ration slightly — a resting dog burns noticeably less than an active one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lick mat safe after surgery?
Usually yes, and it's one of the best tools for crate rest — but check with your vet first, particularly with abdominal surgery, a cone, or medications that affect appetite.
