Snuffle mats for dogs

A snuffle mat is a fabric mat with dense fleece strips you hide dry food in. Your dog has to sniff, nudge and work each piece out, which turns a rushed bowl into ten to twenty minutes of concentrated foraging.

It's the single most effective enrichment tool we sell, because sniffing is instinctive — there's nothing to teach and most dogs get it within one meal.

How to choose the right one

Which size do you need?

Small dogs up to 10 kg do well with roughly 40 × 40 cm and a shallow pile. Medium dogs suit 50 × 50 cm. Large and giant breeds want 60 × 60 cm or bigger with a deeper pile, so the same portion spreads thinner.

If in doubt, size up: a larger mat always slows a meal down more.

Materials and washing

Look for tightly knotted fleece on a non-slip backing, cool machine washable and air dried flat. Avoid loose strips and glued backings — both fail within weeks of daily use.

How to introduce one

Start with food scattered on top of the strips so your dog wins in seconds, then bury it deeper across the first week. Never dig the food out for your dog; solving it is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I feed a whole meal from a snuffle mat?
Yes, for dry food. Keep the daily portion the same — you're changing delivery, not calories.
Are snuffle mats safe to leave with a dog?
Use them supervised at mealtimes and put them away afterwards. They are feeding tools, not chew toys.
How often should I wash it?
Shake it out after every meal and machine wash weekly on a cool cycle, or sooner if you use wet food.
