Choosing a food puzzle your dog will keep using

The most common food-puzzle mistake is buying the clever-looking one. A puzzle your dog fails at once gets ignored forever; a puzzle they solve fast can be made harder in seconds.

Start one level below what you think

Sliding lids and open compartments first. Lift-out pegs and rotating layers later. Dogs learn the concept of 'food is hidden and I can get it' before they learn any particular mechanism.

Four ways to make an easy puzzle harder

Use smaller pieces so more searching is needed. Cover open compartments with a tea towel. Put the puzzle on carpet so it slides less and requires more precision. Combine two puzzles so food has to be found and then extracted.

Wood, plastic or rubber?

Wood looks good in a living room and suits dry food, but never goes in a dishwasher. Plastic is easy to clean and cheap, and takes wet food. Rubber survives chewers. Match the material to your dog's habits, not your shelf.

Supervision and hygiene

Any puzzle with removable parts is supervised-only. Wash anything used with wet food after every meal; dry-food puzzles can go weekly.

Frequently asked questions

My dog solves every puzzle in a minute. Now what?
Smaller food pieces, a towel over the top, and combine tools — a puzzle inside a box on a mat. Difficulty is about layers, not price.
Are wooden puzzles better than plastic?
Only for dry food and non-chewers. Plastic and rubber are more practical for wet food and heavy use.
