How much enrichment does a dog need?

There is no single number, but there are useful ranges. Age, breed drive and how much of your dog's day is spent alone all move the target.

Rough daily targets

Adult pet dog, low drive: 15 minutes of deliberate brain work, mostly through meals.

Adult working breed — collie, malinois, spaniel, husky: 30 to 45 minutes, split across the day.

Puppy: several 3 to 5 minute sessions, and far more sleep than most owners expect.

Senior: 10 to 20 minutes of low-effort sniffing, which often matters more as walks shorten.

Alone time raises the requirement

A dog home alone for six hours needs its stimulation front-loaded and placed at departure, not saved for the evening. A puzzle delivered as you leave does two jobs: occupation and a positive departure association.

Signs of too little

Destructive chewing, pacing, excessive barking, restlessness in the evening, shadowing you around the house, and food obsession.

Signs of too much

A dog that cannot settle without an activity, gets frantic when a puzzle appears, or wakes early demanding stimulation. Sessions should end in rest — if they end in arousal, shorten them.

Frequently asked questions

Does sniffing count as exercise?
It counts as mental work and it lowers arousal, but it doesn't build fitness. Dogs need both.
Is once a day enough?
For a settled adult dog fed through a snuffle mat or slow feeder every day, yes. Two shorter sessions suit high-drive dogs better.
