How to entertain a bored dog indoors

Most so-called behaviour problems in otherwise healthy dogs are boredom problems. The good news is that mental work is far easier to deliver indoors than physical work, and it tires dogs out faster.

Food-based ideas

Feed the whole meal from a snuffle mat instead of a bowl. Scatter dry food across a rug and let your dog find it. Freeze a lick mat with wet food. Hide portions in different rooms and send your dog to search. Load a treat-dispensing ball and let it work the kibble out.

Scent games

Hide a treat under one of three cups and let your dog choose. Wrap food loosely in a towel and let your dog unroll it. Hide a favourite toy and cue a search.

Problem solving

Wooden treat puzzles with sliding lids, muffin tins with tennis balls over the holes, and cardboard boxes stuffed with paper and kibble all deliver real thinking work.

Calm work

Ten minutes of shaping a settle on a mat, chew time, or a frozen lick mat all count. A dog that has practised being calm gets better at being calm.

How much is enough?

Two short sessions a day, ten to fifteen minutes each, changes most dogs' evenings noticeably within a week. It's consistency rather than duration that does it.

Frequently asked questions

Can mental enrichment replace walks?
Not permanently — dogs need to move, sniff outdoors and see the world. But on a rainy day, during illness, or through crate rest, enrichment feeding covers the gap far better than nothing.
