How to clean a snuffle mat
A snuffle mat handles food every day, so it needs the same attention as a food bowl. The good news is that most mats are machine washable if you treat them gently.
After every use
Take it outside and shake it hard, strips down, to release crumbs and dust. Thirty seconds is enough.
Weekly wash
Machine wash at 30–40°C on a gentle cycle with a mild, fragrance-free detergent. Skip fabric softener — it leaves residue and dulls the scent your dog is working with.
Air dry flat or hanging. Tumble drying shrinks fabric strips and weakens the knots.
Wet food and drool
Rinse the affected area under warm water straight away, then wash. Better still, keep wet food on a silicone lick mat and reserve the snuffle mat for dry food.
Smells and mildew
Soak for twenty minutes in cool water with a cup of white vinegar, then wash as normal. Always dry fully before storing — a damp mat rolled in a cupboard is how mildew starts.
When to replace
Replace when strips have been chewed loose, the backing is fraying, or your dog can pull pieces free. Loose fabric is a swallowing risk.
