Dog enrichment ideas for every season

Enrichment fails when it depends on good weather. These ideas are sorted by what the day actually looks like outside.

Rainy days indoors

Scatter the whole meal across a snuffle mat and then move the mat to a new room each day. Roll food into towels. Build a cardboard search box. Hide portions on a staircase. Teach one new trick per rainy afternoon — new learning is heavy mental work.

Hot summer days

Freeze lick mats with plain yoghurt, kefir or wet food. Freeze broth in a shallow tray. Scatter feed on shaded grass in the evening rather than midday. Add a paddling pool and drop floating food in it.

Dark winter evenings

Scent work suits the dark — dogs don't need light to sniff. Hide food along a hedge on your evening walk. Use a treat-dispensing ball indoors for movement. Warm wet food slightly onto a lick mat; the smell carries further and holds attention longer.

Spring and autumn outdoors

Take the snuffle mat to the garden. Let long-grass scatter feeding take twenty minutes. Sniff-walk a new route weekly — a fresh scent landscape is enrichment in itself, no equipment required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop enrichment getting boring?
Change one variable at a time: location, container, food texture or difficulty. Same tools, new puzzle.
Can enrichment replace a walk on a really bad-weather day?
For one day, yes. Twenty minutes of foraging plus training covers most dogs' needs when going out isn't sensible.
