Choosing slow feeder bowl size and maze depth

Two numbers matter: how much food the bowl holds, and how deep the ridges are. Get either wrong and your dog either can't reach dinner or scoops it out in twenty seconds anyway.

Capacity by dog size

Small dogs under 10 kg: roughly 350 ml capacity. Medium 10 to 25 kg: 500 to 750 ml. Large over 25 kg: 900 ml or more, or split the meal across two servings.

Fill a slow feeder no more than two-thirds full — food needs room to sit inside the maze, not on top of it.

Maze depth by muzzle shape

Long-muzzled breeds — collies, greyhounds, spaniels — cope with deep, narrow mazes and need them to slow down at all.

Flat-faced breeds — pugs, bulldogs, boxers — need shallow, wide patterns. A deep maze is genuinely unreachable for them and simply means a missed meal.

Medium muzzles do well with mid-depth spiral or wave patterns.

Wet food, dry food or raw

Dry food suits any maze. Wet food works in wide, shallow mazes and turns into a cleaning problem in deep ones. For raw, choose a smooth-surfaced bowl you can put in a dishwasher.

Stability

A big dog will tip a light plastic bowl. Look for a rubber ring or a weighted base — or set the bowl inside a shallow tray to keep it in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is a slow feeder safe for a flat-faced dog?
Yes, with a shallow, wide maze. Deep spiral bowls are the wrong choice for brachycephalic breeds.
How much should a slow feeder slow eating down?
From under a minute to five or ten. If your dog still finishes in a minute, the maze is too shallow for them.
